How to care for silver jewellery
Silver is meant to be worn and to last for generations. A little care keeps it looking as it did on the first day.

Sterling silver darkens slowly over time. This is tarnish: a thin layer that forms when silver meets sulphur in the air, and it happens faster with damp, perfume and some skin types. It is harmless and easy to remove, and the best way to prevent it is simply to wear your silver often.
Storing
- Keep each piece in its own soft pouch or a small zip bag. Less air means slower tarnish, and pieces cannot scratch one another.
- Store jewellery somewhere dry, away from the bathroom.
- Lay chains flat or hang them so they do not tangle.
Wearing
- Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hair spray and lotion.
- Take it off before bathing, swimming, exercise or cleaning.
- Wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing to remove skin oils before you put it away.
Cleaning polished silver
A soft silver polishing cloth is all most pieces need. Rub gently along the surface and the shine returns. For heavier tarnish on a piece without stones, a little mild soap in warm water and a very soft brush will help; rinse, then dry completely.
Cleaning oxidised silver
The dark tone in an oxidised piece is deliberate, so clean it gently. Wipe only the raised areas with a soft cloth, and never use a silver dip or paste, which would remove the dark detail along with the tarnish.
The best care for silver is to wear it.
Pearls and stones
- Pearls are soft and sensitive. Keep them away from water, perfume and cosmetics, and wipe them with a soft dry cloth.
- Coral, found in the navratna, needs the same gentle care as pearls.
- Emerald, ruby and sapphire are harder, but avoid knocks, sudden heat and chemical cleaners. Emeralds in particular should never go into an ultrasonic cleaner.
If a piece ever needs more than a gentle clean, or a stone feels loose, stop wearing it and ask us.
